The Pantheon
E’ One of the most extraordinary monuments of ancient Rome and one of the city's most visited attractions.
Originally built in 27 B.C. by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and later rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in the second century A.D., the Pantheon is considered one of the best-preserved Roman buildings in the world.
Its most famous feature is its perfectly proportioned dome, which for nearly two thousand years has remained the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built. In the center is the oculus, a circular opening that lets in natural light, creating a spectacular effect inside the basilica.
Inside the Pantheon are also the tombs of important Italian personalities, including Renaissance painter Raphael Sanzio.
The square overlooked by the Pantheon, Piazza della Rotonda, is one of the liveliest places in the historic center, surrounded by historic buildings, cafes and restaurants.
Navona Square
A few minutes' walk from the restaurant is the beautiful Piazza Navona, one of Rome's most famous and scenic Baroque squares. The square was built over the remains of the Domitian Stadium, an ancient Roman stadium used for athletic competitions. Its elongated shape still retains the structure of the ancient Roman facility.
The symbol of the square is the spectacular Fountain of the Four Rivers, designed by the great Baroque artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century. The fountain represents four great rivers of the continents known at the time: Danube (Europe), Nile (Africa), Ganges (Asia), and Río de la Plata (America). Around the square are also two other monumental fountains and the splendid church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.
Today Piazza Navona is one of the liveliest places in downtown Rome, filled with street performers, musicians and historic venues.
Stone Square
A short walk from the Pantheon, it is famous for housing the remains of the Hadrian's Temple. The temple was built in 145 AD by Emperor Antoninus Pius to honor his predecessor and adoptive father Hadrian. It was originally a large sacred building surrounded by Corinthian marble columns, part of a monumental complex in the heart of imperial Rome.
Eleven columns about 15 meters high are visible today, incorporated into the 17th-century building designed by Carlo Fontana. Over the centuries the area changed function: in the Middle Ages the temple was transformed and adapted to other uses, eventually becoming part of civic buildings.
The square owes its name precisely to the presence of these imposing ancient stone columns, which create one of the most striking views of the historic center of Rome and testify to the continuity between the ancient and modern city.
St. Eustatius Square
It has its roots in Rome's imperial and Christian history, rising in an area formerly occupied by Nero's Baths. The name of the square and the district of the same name comes from the figure of the Roman general Placidus, who according to legend converted to Christianity after seeing a glowing cross between the antlers of a deer during a hunting trip, later taking the name Eustace.
La Basilica which dominates the space, characterized precisely by the deer head with the cross on the tympanum, is said to have been built on the very house of the saint. Over the centuries, the square has become a pulsating center of intellectual and institutional life, being within walking distance of the ancient seat of Sapienza and the Senate of the Republic.
In addition to its historical value, the square is world-famous for hosting St. Eustatius The Cafe, a historic wood-fired roastery established in 1938. This café is considered a true Roman institution, a destination for residents and tourists alike for its famous “Gran Caffè,” known for its creaminess and blend prepared according to a recipe that remains a jealously guarded secret to this day.
Caravaggio's masterpieces
La Church of St. Louis of the French, located in the historic center of Rome and consecrated in 1589, is the national church of the French community in the city. Famous for its rich Baroque decoration, it houses one of the most important pictorial cycles in the history of art: three paintings by Michelangelo Merisi known as Caravaggio, made between 1599 and 1602 for the Contarelli Chapel. The works - The Vocation of St. Matthew, The Martyrdom of St. Matthew e St. Matthew and the angel - recount episodes from the life of the evangelist with the characteristic realism and powerful chiaroscuro that made Caravaggio one of the most revolutionary masters of painting. This extraordinary cycle marks one of the seminal moments in Baroque art and is still a must-see for scholars and visitors alike.
Via del Corso
In the heart of Rome's historic center lies Via del Corso, one of the city's most famous and busiest streets. About 1.5 kilometers long, it connects Piazza Venezia to Piazza del Popolo, crossing one of the capital's richest areas of history, art and culture.
The origin of the road dates back to the ancient Via Flaminia, built by the Romans in the 3rd century BC to connect Rome with northern Italy. Over the centuries this road has maintained a central role in the life of the city, becoming an important axis of connection and trade.
The name “Corso” comes from the jockeyless horse races that took place here during the Roman Carnival between the 15th and 19th centuries. Today Via del Corso is one of Rome's main shopping streets, where stores, historic buildings and churches coexist along one of the city's most iconic promenades.
